"NewtownbreaksOk, I admit, I was one of the people that would have loved to have seen these in the final. After a very good and enjoyable heat performance, they needed to be on top form in this semi final, given the quality of the competition.Tonight I thought they were just plain dull. Partially, I think this might be attributed to sound problems. (pointing a mic, when not singing, at the monitors causing feedback, being a major annoyance. Please never do that again). I don't think I heard the flute either. So some of it was their fault, some of it possibly not.The rhythm section is very very good. It is always a joy to watch Ryan play. Tonight we had to, since not much else appeared to be going on.Not even doing covers, (i think we agreed after the heat, it was classed as a cover, so should be point deductable) could get the crowd dancing.I had high hopes, they could pull this out the bag but was left feeling very disappointed."
Not sure he was feeling the groove lol.............

I have to dissagree with him 100%..
The main and only problem at Fusion was the sound. We have played only two other places as a band, the navy club, where the sound was good and My party on Sunday where the Flute could be heard for the first time and the overall sound was cool.
The problem at fusion seemed to be the fact that if we were a screamy cock rock band or emo rubbish then the sound guy would cope, where as with subtle instuments and vocals that are soulful and in tune things went horribly wrong .... not once but twice. now that is a pattern emerging and lends me to believe that it was 100% the sound guys fault! He had 20 minutes to push the flute into the mix but didn't. But he did think it right to change a vocal mic mid song but still complained that Grace did not sing loud enough (those of you that know here realise that her voice is plenty noisy enough).
Can i just make a small note about "cover versions" too. Since the 70's when producers started borrowing samples and breaks from well know tunes there has been a culture of sampling ot borrowing of musical phrases and hooks. A "cover version" is a copy of the original tune recorded in more or less the same style. A "Remake" is a significantly different version. A "Remix" is a version that has been taken apart and generates a new tune using the original recording. An original tune using a sample or a small portion of the lyrics or melody is just that.. an original tune.
The groove tune we do uses the following:The chorus hook and bassline from "Groove is in the Heart" (which was originally created by sampling Herbie Hancocks "Bring out the birds" so would you say groove is in the heart is a cover?)There is a break using the start of a scissors tune, which was a cover of a Pink Floyd tune.We then break into the bridge of Bootylicious on which we use a different rhythm and altered bassline. So to recap.. Our song "groove is in the fart" uses not only original hooks and lyrics but also stuff that has been borrowed from everything from pop to 70s prog rock. It is not a cover version, it is not a remix, it is not a remake, it is an original tune that borrows from a few places which in turn have been borrowed from other people. If you want to be pedantic then I guess you can call it a Megamix which puts up with such musical pioneers as Jive Bunny. But it is not a true megamix which involves mixing the original tunes into one continuous song.
Well I seem to have rejected all of the alternatives so it looks like it is an original tune after all.
Responses greatly appreciated
